Based on a true story, Jimmy Morris (Dennis Quaid), a high school science teacher and baseball coach makes a promise to his team – If they won the District Championship, he will tryout for a Major League Baseball team.
A failed #4 overall draft pick in 1983 who had undergone multiple arm/shoulder surgeries, Jimmy threw 12 consecutive 98mph pitches and was offered a minor league contract.
Jimmy finally made it to the Major Leagues, where he struck out the first batter he faced.
A great true story and the best part, it is VERY family friendly. Rated G, very rare for a live action film.
RECOMMENDATION
One of my favorite baseball movies. It doesn’t make too many people’s top ten, but definitely worth a watch.
The Rookie is rated 6.9/10 on IMDB and is 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
