Thursday night, the Kansas City Royals announced they signed the 2012 #5 overall draft pick, RHP Kyle Zimmer from the University of San Francisco, giving Zimmer a $3 million signing bonus.
It took only three days for the Royals and Zimmer to come to an agreement – a benefit of the new “slotting” structure and the moved up signing deadline in 2012. Zimmer’s $3M is $500K less than the slotting allotment for the fifth pick. The money saved on Zimmer will allow the Royals to spend the money elsewhere in signing 2012 draft picks.
